The Norway on the right seems to have the narrower habit which these trees seem to adopt more in my neck of the woods. I have some to post eventually which are a very columnar.

Hi Joel - ecologically, the Balkan forests are perhaps most like the forests in the Siskiyou Mountains in SW Oregon; they are climatically similar, and like them, they hold the highest regional conifer biodiversity (for Europe and N America, respectively).

I apologize for my lack of geographical knowledge. i should know better, as my paternal grandparents emigrated from Slovenia and settled in Washington State where I am from. I have lived in Michigan though for the last 26 years. This picture strongly reminds me of home, in the forests of the Northwest of the United States. Norway spruce surprisingly doesn't attain tremendous heights in the NW United States where you might expect it would. Here in Michigan perhaps the colder winters help it as they grow to perhaps 30 meters. They seem tall to me here, I suppose it is a matter of what you get used to....A pleasure to get to know you!

Thanks Joel! Indeed, in many respects the forests of the Balkan (not Baltic!) mountains resemble some mountain forests of the NW US, definitely more than those in the eastern US. High precipitation but quite dry summers, the dominance of tall conifers etc. A difference is that in the Balkans a deciduous tree (beech) is an important component.

Where are you located now?

A very tall tree! It appears the forests of the Baltic republics are quite similar to the ones i grew up in in the the NW United States. A fine picture! 5/5
