Of course it is possible to take a core out of the stool as well as the branches / trunks to see how many rings can be found. Some oak coppice in the Netherlands proved to be around 250 years old, but this doesn't proof the original tree wasn't older. The oldest parts can have rotted away.

Hi Acerus!

It is unfortunately impossible to estimate the age of a coppiced tree with any degree of accuracy at all; any estimate could be up to 100% or more error, either way ;-) But yes, several hundred years seems quite possible.

Coppiced maples are rare, but I have seen them occasionally. Most of the ones I have seen, are probably unintentional - someone cut down a maple, and the stump sprouted new growth without their wanting it. But there could easily be differences between Britain and Austria in coppicing practice.

Thank you all for this information.I´m very interessted in this kind of science.

So the original maple-tree could be some centuries old. How can you estimate the age of this tree. What would you say how old this tree could be originally and in its coppice-manifistation ? Is it a rarement to see a maple-coppice?

Hi !

This is evidenced that this method of ancient pruning can do a very old tree, because in his natural place, the long branches can broke, the heigh of the specimen can him facilitate the fall. But when the cut are regular (between 2 to 12 years),the tree is in the good way.

The first problem is : when the reserve of nutriment of the tree who are stocked in the base of branches (strands) migrate with the time, the pruning can be prejudicial for the tree and in a few year the whole decays.

A french document, but you can see many pictures :

and a good english doc of the veteran and pollard trees :

Hi Acerus, I think Tim has covered this well, but there are more details at German wikipedia here, and an even longer article in English wikipedia here. Hope this helps!

I would say "Stockausschlag" - this is a group of smaller trees (or single tree if you will) sprouting from the same root system, having the same DNA, as they originate from the same tree, that was cut down to the ground over and over again in ancient times. People used the young shooting wood for making brooms, hammer handles, baskets and other household materials, used the wood as fuel in long deep, stone ovens, to create natural hedges to keep sheep and cattle, ... This practice can go on for many hundreds of years so it is very hard to accurate estimate the age of a coppice stool. Some might originate from a seed that sprouted thousands of years ago, although the tree(s) itself might only look like a few hundred years.

Kind regards,

Tim
