Dawn redwood Kosugidani in Yakushima

There is one dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) Kosugidani in Yakushima (Kagoshima).

I'm told this tree was a post-WWII gift from the US for saving the life of a pilot who crashed in the nearby mountains.

The girth of this tree is not known. Its height is not known. This tree was planted in 1968, which makes it exactly 47 years old (Jenny, Aug 14, 2012).
