Nettlecombe Park is a beautiful old estate with a 16th century Tudor and Georgian style house (Nettlecombe Court), a mideaval church and a farm, situated within Exmoor National Park. It lays sheltered at the northeast incline of the Brendon Hills and has 90 hectare of undulating parkland planted with solitarian trees and treegroups. Among these oaks and sweet chestnuts are most common. Several sessile oaks are outstanding large and beautiful and were famous from old for their large size. Although in the 19th century a very good price was offered for the oaks, the owner left them standing. The shelter as well as the very good red sandstone and lime soils are responsible for the outstanding growth. The estate is also of importance because of the many species of rare lichens and beetles.
